Biography & Education


Dr. Gregory James is the Senior Medical Director with Optum, Senior Community Care (SCC). He works with the Clinical Teams who collaborate with Assisted Living (AL), and the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care (PALTC) Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) for their residents who are enrolled in UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans (ISNP and IESNP).

Dr. James is the Immediate Past Chairman of the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP). This is the largest Certification Board in the Osteopathic Profession with over 15,000 current and active board certified members.

Dr. James is a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) and has been selected as the National Educator of the Year by this organization. He has been selected as the Physician of the Year by the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA), the Florida Society of the ACOFP, and the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society (PCOMS). Dr James has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from PCOMS and from FOMA.

Dr. James was the Family Medicine Residency Director for Sun Coast Hospital for over 10 years, and the Founding Director of the St Petersburg General Hospital Family Medicine Residency. He was selected for several years in a row as one of the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) Mentors of the Year at their Annual House of Delegates. He was also voted as the Instructor of the Year for the entire Sun Coast Hospital Medical Education Program. He has served as a Florida Representative to the Annual National AOA House of Delegates in Chicago, IL for over 20 consecutive years.

Dr. James received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and his Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He completed a three-year residency in Family Medicine at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, FL, and is board-certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics by the (AOBFP / AOA). He is also certified by the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (ABPLM).
